Recently took a trip to saint charlie's place for a birthday. The food itself was delicious, and although it was expensive and service was slow, the steak au poivre alone was enough to deserve 4 over 3 stars. I would give it 3.5 if I could. Food- We decided to skip apps since it was pricey and it took a long time for the waitress to come take our drink orders. So straight to dinner. I had the steak au poivre and holy balls it was good. The steak was cooked perfectly to medium, the mashed potatoes were creamy and prepared steakhouse style with the skins in them, great asparagus, and that cognac sauce. Tasted like my grandmas champagne gravy and that is the highest grade of compliment I can give. Would recommend this dish to anyone. Warning: don't order the kids steak. My ten year old brother cut it in half, but I could have eaten it in one bite, and it was fifteen bucks. Service- Nice but slow. Forgivable because of how busy they were. This restaurant definitely has a lot to work on, but because of the amazing steak, I'm giving it four stars. I would highly recommend for special occasions, but otherwise there are less expensive options.

So delicious! Went here for date night and had such a great time. We shared their steak for two. To die for!!! The chef came by and told us how he cooked it. Great old school steakhouse atmosphere. The drinks were also very good. We had a French martini and a regular martini. Very yummy! We will definitely be back.

8/25/2015 My wife and I enjoy coming here occasionally for the ambiance in the lounge and the good food. The service has been consistently unpleasant the last few times. I'm not sure who the older angry lounge server is, but she has some anger issues. After waiting at a bar table for 10 minutes I finally went to the bar itself asking who our server might be. She snapped at me "I am! I'll be right there". The lounge was not overly busy - and we are patient people. She finally came over and asked us what we wanted to drink. It was a couple of martini's. She came back with the drinks - set them down without a word and she was gone. We wanted to eat as well. So now I have to go back up to get some menus. The general rudeness persisted, culminating with our expensive appetizers being more or less dropped in front us, the dirty dishes not removed throughout the evening and the check silently dropped off. No thanks - nothing. The bill hovered around $130.00. The food is great - hand down. The martini's are delicious. The service though for the last two times was so bad - it breaks my heart to move on. It's a wonderful looking restaurant and a great place for a quiet busy couple to relax, however lousy service just puts a little back rain cloud over everything. If we were treated even average, this would be a 4 or 5 star review. Update: After reading previous reviews I think we had Amanda as well. Our wife and I will try again and if she is gone and the service is where it needs to be for a restaurant of this caliber I will certainly adjust the review.
(2)Dan G.
Disappointed in the service. Our sever Amanda was short, disrespectful and borderline offensive with her demeanor. While the food was yummy, steakhouses should pride themselves in more than just the quality of their beef. After all, in Chicagoland there are well over 100 different steakhouses. Go to Chamagaucha, Benny's, Morton's or Gibsons. The staff there truly values the customer, which makes the quality of a fantastic meal even better. I will not be back.

The terrible service last night left a bad taste in my mouth it nearly muted out the great potential the food had at St Charles Place. My date and I arrived around 8pm Monday night. It took about 10 minutes for us to be assigned a waitress, who eventually came around and said, what would you like to drink? No welcome or nothing. Examples of bad service: Never asked us if our food was to our liking The first martini my date ordered had blue cheese olives when he specifically asked for regular olives and the second martini had no olives I was having a deep conversation with my date and the waitress yelled at me from two tables down and asked if I needed something then walked to our table and told me I had a facial expression like I needed something (huh?) Didn't offer us dessert and instead gave us the check, we asked if we could have dessert and she said oh yeah sorry kitchen is closed you guys are actually my last table we closed the kitchen long ago... What? Why didn't you tell us? Stayed by our table to get the check and watched us leave the tip and stated she needed to do her paperwork In between all of this she was practically throwing our plates when she put them on our table and when she would ask us if we needed anything she would walk away as she was asking. Ughhhhh.. Now I get when people say they wouldn't return to a restaurant with bad service no matter the food. Ambience, food, quirkiness, all was muted out by one very inhospitable waitress. Unacceptable. $130 down the drain. NEVER returning, I would rather go to chipotle across the street.

I went to St. Charles Place this past Monday (Half Price Burger Night). It is a steakhouse as well as a banquet hall. We arrived at 7:45 P.M. for our 7:30 P.M. reservation. The restaurant wasn't packed but it wasn't completely empty. My party was seated in a very secluded part of the facility. The dim lighting and old fashioned 'vibe' the restaurant gave off was comforting. I knew that St. Charles place had existed but I had no idea what it was or how big it was inside. My mom mentioned that it was akin to an old supper club (she's not even that old but older than me). St. Charles Place features standard steakhouse fare; steaks, seafood, pasta, sandwiches, and burgers. They have some unique appetizers and specialties such as Steak Tartare and Roasted Duck. I ordered a bowl of the French Onion Soup to start off. It was extremely cheesy and I enjoyed it. It was a bit overpriced for $8.99; probably a $4.99 value. For my entrée, I ordered the 11 oz. Filet with a garden salad and Italian vegetables. As one can see in my photo, the steak was served topped with an onion ring and side of mushrooms! My steak was cooked perfectly to a medium too. The garden salad was pretty small, but the balsamic vinaigrette with the salad was actually the best vinaigrette I'd ever had! As for the sides, well, they were excellent as well. Not over seasoned, either! I expected to pay a high price for my meal ($38 plus soup), but I was very satisfied with the meal. Why not five star? The service at STC place was average at best. The waitress was nice, but she disappeared at various points during the night. Also, I don't know if is policy, but she never refilled our waters; only the busboys did it. Overall, I enjoyed my experience here. They are known for their Ribeye (seen on Chicago's Best). If the service improves the next time I'm here, I will give them a nice bump.

Sat promptly, clean, excellent service. Good food and very fresh, Was in, sat, fed, and out within an 1hr15mins. Crab cakes tasty and moist, shrimp cocktail zesty and fresh, 32oz Rib eye (split for 2) covered in mushrooms, 2 sides and 2 side salads. Plus one glass of wine. Total $107. A tad expensive for us but excellent choice for our anniversary meal. Decor a tad cheesy (red antlers over fake fire and leopard print chairs) tho I think that's the feel of the place. low lighting (tough to see menu) similar to a supper club, guy who greeted us at door was a lil sweaty (oops thats the owner) . So all n all very pleasant experience and would give it 9/10 and would go back.

Our server, Dan was amazing and the Food was great. I had the medium rare Fillet with the horseradish crust and it was divine. Tender does not describe it well enough.

We sat in the room with the giant fireplace. So pretty! I had Shrimp Fettuccine Alfredo and my husband had the NY Strip Steak Au Puivre. Both our meals were awesome! We'll definitely be back! Highly recommend! Entrees aren't cheap, but the food portions are plenty!!!

This place has an awesome atmosphere. As Morty Seinfeld said, "Cheap fabric, dim lighting...that's what sells merchandise." We arrived about 745 PM with our 730 PM reservation (which wasn't needed on a Tuesday night). The pictures on the wall and the menu are different. Let's just say they have a lot of character. Drinks were ordered and service was particularly slow. This wasn't a HUGE issue but it was late and some people had to be up early the next day. MONDAY NIGHT IS BURGER NIGHT BUT NO SUBSTITUTIONS (which is weird to think about...restaurants should aim to please, no?). I bookmarked this place due to it being on Chicago's Best in February 2015. I always love when suburban places are highlighted. I try to get as many as I can. Anyways, I ordered the 11 oz. filet mignon and it was cooked to perfection. One of the best steaks I've ever had. I haven't had that many. I don't have those "RICH PEOPLE PROBZ". This came with vegetables and a salad. Plus one gigantic delicious onion ring. This place is also a banquet hall so it is HUGE. It made me feel like I was in with the F. Scott Fitzgerald "Great Gatsby" crowd. I want to go back, but I hope the service improves! Can't imagine how it is when it is busy...! THE PLACE (HAHA) to be!

St. Charles Place has great food, no doubt. However, the hostess could leave a lot to be desired. We went for an early dinner on a Saturday, and when we entered into the restaurant, there was no one at the front to greet us. As we made our way further into the restaurant, we were approached by the hostess who was rude and short. I would have given it a much higher rating, but the hostess was that rude that a month later I still remember the experience. Due to this, I personally will not be back. The food was great, and I enjoyed the atmosphere and the waitress, but the hostess completely turned me off from this restaurant.
(3)Laura C.
The food is fresh, the service is great. Omg the steak and burgers. I love the ambience here too. Quite romantic.
(5)NANCY G.
I was introduced here in 1998 on my first date with my husband..we have enjoyed this place for almost thirty years..at least monthly with our family our drinks at the bar...I stopped in tonight and the new bartender was having a very nice conversation with some single man.. I did wait patiently and then it was just wtf here..totally ignored!!...this bartender was involved in a deep conversation and I just sat there!! Finally I spoke up for myself..and was treated as if I was interrupting ..wow... I just walked out after getting my wine...who the hell would sit at a bar and be treated like that..
(1)Bob P.
Now that's stand up!! Manager took care of the small issue that I had...therefore, I'm upping my Yelp status to 5 stars....which this place deserves!! Ford, GM, Chrysler take note. This is how to properly handle a problem. Identify it, fix it, and let your customer know that it's been done! ! To the Mgr of the St. CHARLES: THANKS FOR THE OFFER TO RETURN OUR TIP. You took care of the problem and that's all I can ask! Let the server keep it. She earned it and probably would have received more as we really enjoyed our night there!! Great job!! And a great place to have dinner in St Charles! !

Great place with lots of charm and pretty good food to boot. Just celebrate my birthday at the St Charles place steak house. I had never been there and was pleasantly surprised at how nice it was inside. The place has character for sure. A big, warm fireplace, nice romantic lighting, and interesting decorations makes it very inviting and comfortable. Our waiter was nice but seemed distracted. He did his job and made sure we had everything we needed but really didn't interact with us anymore than that. Which actually, sometimes is nice. The food was excellent. I had the filet and lobster and my girlfriend had the ribeye. Both steaks were prepared just like we ordered them and the lobster was melt in your mouth delicious. During our meal the manager stopped by the table to make sure we were enjoying ourselves, which I think is a really nice touch. All in all, a great experience. The one downside is the place is pretty pricey. They do have items like burgers on the menu which are less expensive but if you are going to have a steak, seafood, or wine, plan on dropping some coin. I would say St Charles place is a great place for a special occasion or a romantic date night. The food is excellent and the ambiance is great.

We treat ourselves to st Charles place twice a year. Usually go for saganaki and crab cakes. Never had a bad server. Always treated kindly. Love the staff and atmosphere. This is our go to place for crime brûlée. Once we were sitting next to a young family with a crying baby. We had no qualms about it we have been in their place but management served us free dessert in a private corner to make up for it. It was totally unexpected since we didn't complain.

This was my second time visiting this restaurant. The owner was really cool and the service was exceptional. They go above and beyond to make sure you are happy with everything. The food was nothing short of perfection. I had the oysters Rockefeller and the shrimp dejongue for appetizers. The flavor of both of these were out of this world! For dinner, my friend and I split the 32 oz bone in ribeye and lamb chops upon the owners recommendation. We were not disappointed. They sliced the ribeye into strips for us and the whole platter was covered in mushrooms at our request. We were able to serve ourselves with tongs. The meat was cooked exactly how we ordered it (medium-rare is definitely the way to go). Au-Jus was served with the ribeye and a lemon flavored juice with the lamb. I will definitely be back!
(5)Terry S.
The food was fairly good though the cognac sauce with my steak was very salty. Our waitress was tolerant of us at best and at the end of the night when i presented a Groupon she lectured me on how I should have mentioned that upfront since one of the cocktails we ordered was a special and you can't have special with the Groupon. I doubt that we will make the trip back here. I looked more closely at the Groupon and after the restrictions about when you could use the Groupon was a list of things you couldn't use the Groupon on. That is just too much stuff for me to keep track of. There are just too many places with great food and service too waste my time here.

I came back w my parents the other night because we have always enjoyed great restaurants and we were not disappointed. My parents are older don't eat as much as they used to so when dad ate a good portion of his steak tonight that is huge. We sat down and my parents were as impressed w the décor and roominess of the area we were in. We ordered drinks and were able to enjoy them casually because the waitress, Sherrie, gave us plenty of time. Dad ordered the NY Strip, mom had the 10oz prime rib and I had the rack of lamb served double cut. My mom and I enjoyed the cream of spinach soup & dad had the salad w bleu cheese toppings. A lot of bleu cheese. The steaks were done as requested w fresh mushrooms on the NY Strip and nice pinkness on the prime rib w a horseradish dressing on the side. My lamb was very good w a decoratedly cut lemon in the accompanying au jus. Anybody who complains about the décor is nuts which we were quite comfortable. We all wished that St Charles wasn't so far away because we would be regulars. The drinks were great and we appreciated the bartenders "loose" arm. Also appreciated Sherrie's fine service.

I've been here several times and the food and service is typically middle of the road ..but since I live literally right down the street it's very convenient. I'm a huge burger fan so I wanted to one of there's but was really disappointed by their egg burger and oily fries. In addition to the bogus burger experience I was floored by the some of the bad attitudes of the staff and the lack of interest by the manager. Sadly I probably won't be returning.
(2)Juliet S.
Overall a disappointing experience for us. We went here since we got a Groupon deal, and we always love some good steaks. Upon driving up to the restaurant, the HUGE sign by the road for the restaurant seemed outdated and tacky. Once we entered the restaurant, we waited for about 5 minutes before the hostess showed up. I told her the name we made our reservation under, she asked rudely:" What the name?" So I had to tell her again. Once we were shown to our table, she put the menus down and walked away quickly, her parting words were:" Sort them out yourselves." I guess she meant that we should sort the menus out ourselves. Anyway, the first impression was poor. We didn't really feel welcomed since there was no smile and warmth from the hostess at all. We waited about 10 minutes before our waitress showed up. She took our drink order and then disappeared for another 10 minutes before I saw her near our table again. I told her we are ready to order, she told me she would be right back. Once she was back, she was perfectly nice and professional. We were fine with her service from then on. The food was mediocre. The beef veg soup was way too salty, tasted like leftover soup from yesterday. My son was happy with his cheeseburger, but we have had better steaks elsewhere. The green beans was overcooked, and the mashed potato was blend. The entire place seems to stuck at 1980s', from its decoration to the food preparation. For a $85 check, we didn't feel like we've got our money worth, even with the Groupon deal. We will not be back.
(2)Punisher J.
3 stars only because it's like a retirement home in there but the food is real good. Burgers are the best in the area. Food gets 4 stars.
(3)Tom D.
A bit too high priced to get a 5 star out of me - though everything was pretty darn good. The staff were good, selection was good, parking - bla bla bla. What really let me down was the inability for the staff to excel here and turn this solid 4 star into a 5! I believe what really holds it back is the price - without expert service - and a tad better tasting food - this one will remain a 4 until I return for another try. But folks - 4 stars on the first visit is quite impressive - please stop by and give it a try!
(4)Glenn G.
I love this place!! Great ambience in the dining room with the fireplace and Christmas decorations. Tom is a very gracious host making you feel welcome and at ease. The ribeye was cooked to perfection with the right amount of char and spot on temperature wise. The Cline Syrah paired well with the steak. Very eager and accommodating service. So nice to have options that are not chain restaurants and deliver on quality and a personal touch. I look forward to going back.
(5)Matt A.
Been to this place a couple of times and for the is below average and over priced that is it.
(1)Mark D.
OMG! The absolute best steaks I've ever had. Very friendly wait staff. Kind of pricey but worth it.
(4)Ashleigh B.
Me and my family went there tonight for an impromptu dinner. Had no idea that it was a nice place. Definatly should have a reservation and wear nice clothes. The service was great considering the house was full. The menu was complex and large. My cup was always full and the server was flustered at first and seemed crabby but when the rush died down she seemed happier. My food was fantastic. I ordered the meatballs for a starter. They were great. The conaq sauce was amazing. I got the 11 oz filet mignon with green beans and a garden salad. I was not very happy with the salad it seemed like it had been frozen but it was still good. The juicy delicious steak made me forget about the salad. The rolls were warm and butter was delicious. The biance of the building had a 1950s retro feel to it with incadescant lighting and lovely photos on the wall. It is warm and a very friendly but sophisticated environment.
(5)Lindsay B.
I've driven by this place a number of times, and was recently invited to attend a special event here- so this review is really only for special events. Our group hosted an event with just over one hundred people. We had a buffet of appetizers and desserts only- and it was wonderful. They had numerous options for apps, all of which were delicious. My table mate loved the eggrolls the most, while I enjoyed the chicken fingers and the mini-cheesecake dessert. The servers were very friendly, quick, and helped the event run smoothly. As I had such a good experience with a special event, I would certainly consider coming back her for a regular meal another time. There were a significant number of people eating here (some of whom appeared to be regulars) for a Thursday night. I will definitely give this place a try again in the future.
(4)Monica R.
Tom, you and your staff are wonderful. The food is amazing! Prime rib, chicken liver pate, white zin! We definitely will be back... lots of love and hugs from Iowa... Monica
(5)Christine M.
Well the music was very loud and made talking to our 6 was not easy we asked to have it turned down. That was a joke. The wait staff was a nightmare inattentive at best. Asking for water refills and getting a look then taking their time. We need ice teas refilled, they filled it with to much ice and very little tea and never asked if we needed more everywhere, else I have gone for steaks at: Ruth's Chris, Mortons, Gene and Georgetti's-Chicago the service impeccable. The staff would show up briefly serve us and disappear. This restaurant needs to send the wait staff for appropriate training. The food was not up to par. I had the steak salad there was bad lettuce I asked the waitress to take it back and I was told that's the lettuce mix we have its fine. I know bad lettuce it has a smell and is very wilted. Others had fish, prime rib and filets none of us were happy with the meal. The flaming cheese was not the appropriate Greek cheese. If the food and service would have been good the pricing would have been fine. Not recommended and not going back.

Tried St. Charles Place for the first time because I saw some of the pictures on yelp. Wanted to have an evening of celebration with some friends who just opened a new business. We really enjoyed the atmosphere. The staff were friendly and efficient. We were seated in a nice quiet little corner which is nice because I requested that. The dinner was good. I ordered the monster ribeye and we split dinner - as we always do. It tasted good, very tender, but very fatty - maybe that's how it's supposed to be. I tried tomato and onion salad with blue cheese - thumbs up on that. Girlfriend had the Caesar salad and said it was good. Four people, two drinks apiece totaled about $270 after tip. About $70 apiece. The food, while good it wasn't anything that really stood a part for me but the atmosphere was excellent! Go there if you want to celebrate an event in your life and you're not worried about saving money.
(4)Mike T.
No not perfect, but pretty darn close. Our waitress greeted us with warm rolls. Oysters rock started dinner. Very good. The wife ordered the lobster tail. Perfectly cooked. The star of my show was the rib eye for two. It's big and tasty. I always get the one for two people since it comes with salad and two sides. And you always get enough to take some home. Twice baked potato came along also. Good service, friendly wait staff and good food at fair prices. You won't be disappointed.
(4)Paul W.
The steak Au Poire filet mignon was the best I've ever had. The atmosphere takes you back to the good old days when the Rat Pack (Frank & Dean) roamed the Vegas Strip. Service was excellent.
(5)Diane H.
We went there last night for the first time. From the minute we walked in the door we were blown away by the decor and ambiance! It's hard to describe but we couldn't stop looking around and everything just seemed to work. Instantly relaxed. We sat down for dinner and everything on the menu looked amazing. I went with the seared ahi tuna which was prepared perfectly. Hubby had the strip stead, also prepared perfectly (he likes it's rare). Our waitress was awesome and the owner Tom was personable, funny and loves what he does. I can't wait to go back there again!
(5)Abby A.
I'm so confused how anyone could be impressed with the food, the service or the decor. Terrible service terrible food. Dined here on Friday and 2 days later I'm still creeped out.
(1)Jan S.
Awesome place!! We went for the Thanksgiving meal and it was as wonderful as usual!! I love everything about this place--Tom, the decor, our server Katrina, and of course the food. The steaks are great along with the prime rib; great burgers also. If you like your carbs, the dinner rolls are addicting. We are always happy with the food and service when we go here. We are so glad we found this place!!
(5)Hungey H.
Service was great. We had a very friendly server and she remained friendly even after notifying her of our Groupon :) the food is a little pricey but it was good quality and delicious. The decor is nice and I like the dim lights. Gives it a vintage elegant look. They have 1/2 price burgers on Monday! Remember to always tip your server based on the total bill before applying the Groupon or coupon :) always makes them a little happy. First time trying carrot soup and it was scrumptious! Prime rib was juicy and tender and the flaming duck we gave two thumbs up.
(5)Dawn B.
This is one of our favorite restaurants. We've never had any complaints regarding the quality of the food or level of service. The escargot is a must, the entrée's are top notch and we always save room for dessert. Highly recommend this place to everyone. Reservations should definitely be made for weekends.
(5)Sami R.
The food was delicious! Cannot complain about that at all! Both the tomato soup & French onion were great! Prime rib was also excellent! Sad to say the service was absolutely terrible!!!!! When we walked in no one greeted us and when they did, they didn't seem too excited to walk us to our table. It was a solid 8 minutes before we were even greeted at the table! I went to the restroom, & had come back and decided on a meal before anyone had come to the table. Our server never introduced herself nor told us about any specials. If we would have known about the chateau Briand we would have ordered that instead. When our food came and one of the sides was wrong, our waitress blurted out "son of a bitch!" & then said she'd bring the correct one. From then on we didn't expect much of the service. All in all great food & atmosphere, but we got bar quality service instead of fine dining.
(3)A A.
My wife decided to take me there for dinner. We were both pretty impressed. I had the filet. It was really tender and had great flavor. It was one of the best steaks I have ever had. I would recommend going here and I'm sure we will be eating there again soon.
(4)Mercedes Z.
Favorite place to go.....great for that special occasion. Excellent Filet Mignon. Great on atmosphere....cozy fireplace....unique bar area.....unique décor.....Tommy (the owner) sees that all of his guests are satisfied. Highly recommend.
(5)Raphael S.
Having lived in St Charles now for roughly 8 years, I have passed by this place many times. It always seems to be busy so I figured it must be fairly good. My girlfriend said the filet was "ok". It came with a side of what I swear were canned mushrooms. I tasted them and they tasted like they were from a can. If they were not canned, then they were terribly prepared. I ordered crab cakes (lump) that came with a side of a spicy mayo sauce, some sort of corn mix and chef's potatoes. The dinner also came with soup or salad. I chose the soup which was shrimp bisque. The soup was sort of odd. It did not taste like any bisque I've had before. The crab cakes were mushy. Mushy to the point where I was questioning if they were frozen. You expect lump crab cakes to have lumps of crab not what appeared to be shredded crab. The flavor was ok but the texture of the cakes just threw everything off. It reminded me The side of corn blend did not mix at all with the flavor of the crab cakes. I dropped $70 (minus tip) on an ok petite filet with horrible mushrooms, mushy crab cakes and 2 soft drinks (which were $3.00 a piece). Which by the way, neither of us finished eating. The pricing of the food does not in any way match the quality. I would not return.
(2)Lorna W.
My sister and I went there today for an early dinner. WHO KNEW such goodness existed in such a non-descript building. The food was wonderful. The server, Sherrie, was equally good. I had the Steak Au Poivre with Filet Mignon Medallions (fabUlous)and my sister had Shrimp de Jonghe. I am already planning on going back for the Shrimp de Jonghe dish. Again...WHO KNEW! Looking forward to returning.
(5)Jamie B.
What a cool place. All four of us in our group could not get over the various features and design of the dinning rooms. We were on sensory overload and loved it. We also all loved our meals and the great service. I went with the house speciality on teh advice of our awesome waitress; Steak Au Poivre; New York Strip encrusted with black pepper finished with a cognac sauce. It was so yummy!
(4)Kyle E.
The ribeye for 2 dinner was excellent, you won't be disappointed. Oysters were legit. Ambiance was cool and relaxing. About $70 for a dinner for two.
(4)Brenda M.
What a surprise to rediscover this gem of a place. This was not old-fashioned in the tawdry, worn out, run down way that happens to aged steakhouses. The service was en pointe and the food included such classics as chicken liver pate (done right), side car martini ($7), hot rolls and perfect pats of cold butter for each diner. The ambience was cozy and elegant. What a pleasure to dine this way again!
(4)J. P.
my husband and i came here and really liked the ambiance of this place (though i did think it was a little too dark). i felt that service was lacking a bit in the beginning, but got better as the night went on. we spent a lot of money - i had the fillet medallions in a cognac sauce (their #1 special) , and my husband had the charred ribeye - another menu favorite. for the money we spent, it did not quite meet expectations-i felt my medallions were a little too dry. overall, it was very good and we will come back, but i do not think i would recommend ordering an expensive steak here. the bread pudding and goat cheese bruchetta were VERY good, and i highly recommend those items.
(3)Rob L.
Wow! Great 5 star dining with an amazing decor to go with! Amazing bar and really fun menu!
(5)Robert M.
So I ate here tonight to help celebrate a friend of mine's birthday. We were early for our reservation, but we're sent to the bar. There were plenty empty tables to be seen. Took to long for drinks, then our appts took just as long. We had salads coming, but the time between the appts and salad again was long. When our dinners came, the Ribeye was over cooked, but the owner was fast in replacing. I had the Lobster Club, looked good, the bread really wasn't a good match. But there was plenty of lobster. The decor was all over the board. You really couldn't figure out what they were trying to say. It was my first time there. Don't think it will be on my list for a second dinning. Disappointing experience from the moment we walked in he door. Hostess who we later found out was the wife of the owner. Was less than welcoming when we walked in. First thing out of her mouth was "Do you have a Reservation?" A more welcoming would have been "Welcome to St. Charles Place" or " Good Evening, How many in your party"

We had a wonderful experience here. Tom, the owner, was extremely hospitable and the good and service wee outstanding. Highlights were the saganaki, perfectly cooked lobster tail, steak bruschetta, and panko breaded tilapia. It is on the pricy side, but you get what you pay for. (Note: We went in March, but for some reason, my review didn't save. Thanks, Tom!)

I'll reserve my 5-star rating for a second visit to confirm :-) We tried this place for the first time the other day based on a friend's recommendation and of course, all those Yelpers! We'd passed this place many times before and completely overlooked it. So glad that has changed. We loved the decor and they had quite a bit of holiday decorations mixed in as well - but not in a tacky way. It blended well and looked very festive yet elegant. The big fireplace was crackling, twinkle lights above with exposed beams...just lovely. The perfect location for date night or a special occasion. They have at least one private room for larger parties or events. The only thing I felt they could improve upon (and partly why I'm holding back that 5th star) is the music. The music simply didn't fit with the ambiance of the establishment. I love Classic Rock but based on the type of restaurant it is and how it's more of an upscale place it just didn't go together for me. The place seems more like they should have some Dean Martin supper-club-esque type of music playing rather than CCR. Our server was Bill and he was such a pleasure. Just the right amount of graciousness and fun with humor. The food did not disappoint, either. We both had the special, a steak dish (I forget the name), and it was so tendy and delicious. Plenty of mushrooms & sauteed onions in the delicious sauce as well...and the mashed potatoes! Oh the mashed potatoes! The creamy, buttery, heavenly potatoes were so elegantly presented piped around the platter with a large star tip. It looked too pretty to eat but of course we devoured it! The portion was also large, we both took leftoevers home and will get at least one more meal each out of it. Even the calamari we ordered was enough to feed at least 4 people as an appetizer. We will definitely be going back and just may become our new fave for dinner!

I have now been here 3 times in the past year, and each time I leave happy with the meal I just had. I normally order the filet, and it's always cooked perfectly. Part of the reason why this restaurant is appealing is that you know you'll get a good meal no matter what you order, so it's an easy option when you can't think of anywhere else to go. It's especially nice when it's a weekend night and you don't have reservations anywhere else in town (where a lot of restaurants are overcrowded due to lack of quality options in the St. Charles area). My only negative experience was with ordering a cosmo; tasted like it was made with a mix of some sort, very sweet and not enough vodka added to it....I'll stick to the wine from now on.

I don't get to come to St.Charles Place as often as I would like, but I was able to stop by last night for a Valentine's Day dinner with my wife. The food was excellent as always (never a bad meal) and I love the atmosphere. The dining room was full, yet our service was excellent- despite the crowd. I will always recommend SCP to family and friends due to the fantastic food, pleasant wait-staff, and comforting decor. Now, if we can just get the host to smile a little more...

It was late and we were looking for someplace to have a good meal when we saw the sign Steak House. We pulled in, simple enough looking building but much different when you get inside. We were greeted by the very friendly Tom who I assume is the manager and then by our waitress Sherri who was spectacular. Sherri recommended a very nice wine and then let us order a Steak Diane which she was happy to split for us and without an argument. My experience is that some restaurants are not too happy with splitting a meal so her "sure you can slit it" attitude was very welcome. The Steak Diane was perfect and I am sure if anyone orders it they will not be disappointed. The Creme Brule my business partner had for desert was excellent and my chocolate mousse was so good. They don't have espresso but the Bailey's and coffee was a good compliment. i travel to St. Charles occasionally for business and I will look forward to coming back.

I adore this place - the menu and decor are retro enough to be unique without being kitchy. I've been several times over the past few years and have always had a wonderful meal. St. Charles Place is a fun dining spot - plenty to see and a professional wait staff. It's nice to go out to get a great steak at a local (non-chain) restaurant.

I do not write Yelp reviews often. I believe in writing quality and not quantity. As a Restaurateur, I also only believe in writing Yelp reviews for places that I am moved by in some way. St. Charles Place (SCP) moved me. True Story: 1 American, 2 Italians, 2 Swiss, 3 South Africans, 1 Dutchman, 1 Belgian, 1 Turk, 1 Mexican, 1 Austrian were in the city of St. Charles for the next few weeks and wanted to celebrate an occasion - they looked online on Yelp and found St. Charles Place, to celebrate and made RSVPs. Prior to arriving, I reviewed the web-site and was so pleasantly surprised that SCP catered to a variety of tastes. The menu was fairly extensive in my opinion and had some very classic offerings for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians. When we arrived at SCP, I was impressed at the sheer enormousness of the place. The current web-site does not do justice to the size of this place. If you are looking for a place for any-sized celebration, SCP can definitely accommodate. My group was greeted by a friendly man, by the name of Thomas - came to find out that he was the Executive Chef and Owner. Very down to earth and funny, with a little bit of Chicago moxie mixed in. We walked through a crowded main dining room at 8:00 pm, to the back of the restaurant, with our own private dining area. Then appeared the goddess Athena herself, as our waitress. Our waitress, was very friendly and commanded a very pleasant demeanor which was great for our unruly international contingent. Owning a restaurant, I was impressed, that only 1 waitress was assigned to our table, as I observed a full team in action at the vast restaurant. We put in our drink orders, a couple of red wines, some martinis, imported beers and a coca-cola classic for me, the party animal. Then came the really fun part - ordering. I ordered 5 appetizers for the motley crue. Didn't really need too, as SCP serves so much food. Warm bread and butter is delivered to the table and the main entrees usually come with a house salad or soup and a side. Seriously, SCP, is not frugal in anyway. For starters, I ordered the Coconut crusted shrimp, Goat cheese bruschetta, Maryland crab cake, Calamari and Garlic Bread. I was so in love with the dipping sauce that the Coconut crusted shrimp came with, that I practically confiscated the sauce and told everyone that if I couldn't have all of it, that I would start an international incident at the restaurant - the look in my eyes meant that I was serious; hence, my international team allowed me to eat most of the sauce - it was phenomenal - a raspberry reduction with a hint of wasabi or horseradish. I need to pause here to comment on the decor. I loved it. High vaulted ceilings with a woodsy lodge theme, with trees growing inside the restaurants, that were decorated with tiny white lights. Gave it a rustic romantic charm. Perfect for a date or a very nice evening with a bunch of hooligans like us. For main entrees, the ladies ordered their demur dishes, like vegetarian pastas or fish dishes; however, for most of us, we ordered carnivorous dishes. I ordered the Canadian Baby Back Ribs. When my order came out, I thought, that they were surely mistaken, because my dish was huge - enough for two people and only at $23???? Surely, there was some mistake; however, the person across from me got the same and hers was just as big. We could not stop laughing in awe on the portion size. And the most memorable aspect of my dish was the sauce. What is it with this place and the sauces??? They are phenomenal. I am not ashamed to say this, I ate very primitively and with my hands and had sauce all over my mouth and literally licked the shot of sauce that came with my already drenched ribs - the sauce was that good. I woke up this morning still thinking about it. After dinner, the crew ordered desserts and coffees as well as after dinner drinks like Frangelico. The mousse and turtle pie were good. What made the experience really memorable was the hospitality. I told the waitress how much fun we were having and she liked hearing that. Later, I can't remember how it was disclosed, but it turned out our waitress was part owner and the sister-in-law of Thomas, the Executive Chef. Shortly before we closed our tab, Thomas came over to our table and chatted with us briefly. I thanked him for a wonderful time and told him his food was awesome. Being a restaurateur, I know what it takes to run a restaurant. It is not for the faint hearted. The glamor, glitz and lifestyle that you think we restaurateurs have, is just a very nice romantic allusion. The truth is, that it is a lifestyle that we have chosen and one that we are committed too. Thomas and his team are obviously committed as well, given the top notch non-elitist service that we were afforded. We closed the restaurant down and Thomas chatted with us while we were waiting for the taxis. 2 words - Magnanimous & Charismatic. Will be back

The decor is just so over-the-top crazy and random...kinda like Z Gallerie opened a Steakhouse and Family restaurant in the 90's. Very surreal...like you're having dinner in an old school casino on the old Las Vegas Strip. The food was okay, but the decor of this place is just so awesome. You have to give it 4 stars.

About 8 ounces of meat for $60. We ordered the Chateaubriand special for two at $30 per person. This entre was served in a huge canoe shaped dish with loads of vegetables including parmisian stuffed tomatoes, roasted red and green peppers, mashed potatoes, whole green beans and asparagus. We each had eaten one slice of meat when I realized there were only 2 slices of meat remaining. I discovered the meat was resting on several slices of french bread which I assume was to absorb the excess juice or possibly mask the small meat portion. By then it was too late to discuss with management. Also, there was nothing noteworthy or creative about the preparation of the Chateaubriand. I could have done at least as well at home. We liked several other aspects of St Charles Place: linen table cloths, quality utencils, decor and ambiance, room between tables. The Maryland Lump Crabcake at $13 was very tasty except it was not lump crab, unless it was shredded lump crab. Our search continues for extraordinary crab cakes like The Capitol Grill in Lombard. My Hendricks martini at $10 was very good with large bleu cheese olives. (I know I should be asking for cucumber with Hendricks, but I like bleu cheese olives.) Only 2 Cabernets were offered by the glass. the top of the line was only $10, good wine and a generous pour. We will go back but wiser from our first experience and alert for management slight of hand.

To be honest, I've only been here once and I don't think I'll be coming back anytime soon. I only came here because I had an expiring groupon that I needed to use. I've driven by this place numerous times and never knew it existed. It looks so old school and dark from the outside. Should probably revamp the place up. But I guess they are going for the old school feel since the inside atmosphere makes you feel like you're going back in time. The lighting is so dim though, and that was so annoying. Food was crazy expensive. For 2 people with no drinks, just 2 meals, the total ended up being $75....whoa. My steak was alright, not worth the 32 dollar list price. My companion got the 32 dollar scallops, and yes they were big, and I understand it is seafood, but there were only 4 of them. That equates to about 8 dollars a scallop. 7 maybe if you include the mashed potatoes in there. My biggest complaint had to be about the service though. No offense to the guy that was waiting out table, but he was so slow. Like crazy slow. He gave us bread and never asked if we wanted more. Maybe they don't give you more, but who knows, I wouldn't since he didn't say anything. I barely got my water refilled, and that was even through a different guy, bus boy type person. The waiter gave us our food, and never came back to ask if we were doing fine or needed anything. Maybe just one time throughout the meal when obviously I was short on water like the whole time. Then when we finished( I literally timed this part since we were trying to catch a movie at the nearby theater), it took 40 minutes from when I asked for the check to us leaving. Like I'm just speechless. The place was not packed, so what could he have possibly been doing. He came back when we were done and I said we were finished and if we could have the check and a take home container. 10 min goes by, he comes back with a take home container. Another 10 minutes go by, he comes back with the check. Another 10 min goes by, he takes my credit card. Final 10 minutes go by, he gives me my card back. Ended up missing the beginning of the movie too. Not too happy with that.

I was a bit reluctant to try the Cesar salad burger, and was sold with one bite. Since then I've only eaten the burgers at this restaurant and have been pleased with the quality and taste. I think the place would benefit from some updating as it often smells a bit like an old person's apartment. If you can get past this, I recommend giving it a try....you may be pleasantly surprised.

We have been here twice now, first on a groupon and the second for the Monday night burger special. Both meals were excellent! The first time my husband had the NY Strip and I had the shrimp de jonghe. Both were well prepared and tasty! There is no "freezer food" here! My salad came with nice greens (not iceberg) the blue cheese dressing had a generous portion of bleu cheese crumbles on top and was excellent. The rolls are fresh made and warm to the table. I had a giant Bloody Mary that was perfect! Dessert we had the beignets which were phenomenal! Dinner #2 was the 1/2 price burger nite. First off, these are freshly pattied ground tenderloin 8oz burgers. These rascals are worth every penny full price! My husband had the Wisconsin cheddar and applewood bacon burger, it was cooked exactly how he ordered it and it was juicy, tender and delicious! It comes on a pretzel roll that was also good. I had a burger called "le bistro" and let me tell you it was AWESOME! The combination is very unique; sautéed mushrooms (fresh, not canned) in a cognac sauce with a small heap of Caesar salad on a fresh baguette. The baguette was soft so you could bite your sandwich and not have the whole thing smush and fall apart. It was so tasty I could have licked the plate!! The burgers come with fries that are good and very crispy. I will admit the service the first night was a little slow, but, Sarah our server was super friendly and we watched as all the servers were scurrying around. It was busy. Our food came to our table hot, so I will let that slide. The second time our service was a bit faster and still you saw servers scurrying. The prices are to me, just a few bucks more, but the food was so much better. I get so sick of the chains, they're all over salted and just "eh". We live in South Elgin, and we eat out a LOT. I would eat here once for the price and quality instead of twice at somewhere else that's less expensive. The place is very eclectic, one part old fashion steakhouse, one part bistro, one part lodge. It's cozy and unique. We are not "foodies" we just like to get what we pay for and are willing to pay for quality. We will be back, there is a very yummy sounding steak salad I need to try and my husband needs to try the steak and bruschetta appetizer!

Best burger I ever ate on the best bun I ever ate! The prime rib is good too but I just can't order anything but the burger since I tried it. The staff is friendly and the owner is always nice to come over and chat a minute. Definitely give it a try. I wish they were open for lunch like they used to be years ago but it still beats any burger for miles around!

St. Charles Place is located on North Ave. This makes it fairly convenient for me to get to from Bartlett where I live. From the outside it looks like a classic steakhouse with the covered dropoff area in front. I suspect there was a valet at some time in the past, but that no longer seems to be the case. I like parking my own car anyway and they have a private lot that is plenty big. Walking in you are treated to a good old fashioned steakhouse decor. There is lots of wood and dim lighting. This is no chain restaurant and I was thrilled to find it. To the right of the entrance is a bar. It features a full size concrete tree replica with branches to the ceiling. To the left is a wide hallway where the banquet rooms are located. The restrooms are also down that way. The main dining room is subdivided into three large sections. I have always sat in the middle by the huge stone fireplace. There are four person tables as well as the wrap-around booths that I associate with this type of place. The service is fair. My server has always been nice and generally helpful, but they tend to disappear for long periods of time. This is usually when I am looking for another bottle of wine or more bread. I don't know what the manager has them doing, but it is something that I noticed. On the bright side, my water glass is always kept full and plates are cleared efficiently by the busboy. (Is that still the accepted term?) The wine list is not extravagant, but I always find something good to go with my meals. I tend to splurge a little on the wine when i am here because I am already in a spending mood when I know I am going out for steak. The food is delicious. I have had various forms of beef here. The giant ribeye is what I usually get. I think it is 36 ounces. I always take some home to eat the next day. The lamb chops are tasty and grilled to perfection. My wife likes the filet mignon. The only thing I wouldn't recommend is the lobster... or at least not the small tails that they pair with steaks. They are not very tasty and just not worth the additional cost in my opinion. The desserts that I have had are good. I often go with the key lime pie or the creme brulee. Unfortunately, they do not do the dessert tray presentation that used to be common at places like this. I kind of miss it, but it is probably wasteful. Overall, I like St. Charles Place. It represents what a steakhouse looked like before corporate America told the masses that Saltback Steakhouse was the way to go. I even took my father here because he is the one that introduced me to several good steakhouses and he approved of it. It is not cheap, but it is still reasonable for good quality meat. When I am thinking steak, this is where I am going.

I purchased a groupon for this place as I have driven past many times and thought i would give it a try. The first thing you notice when you walk in his the atmosphere. The place feels like an old world steakhouse, and was the highlight of our experience. Once we received our food, however, things went downhill. Nothing we had was horrible, but it was all very mediocre. I had the crab cakes, and my fiancé had the pepper stake. Both tasted bland and, in a way, stale. Again, it wasn't gross or anything, just very bland. Normally that would be OK, but the price is outrageous for what you get. Everything tasted like it has been made that morning, then heated in a microwave. I understand expensive steak houses, especially older themed ones, serve food a little different than many contemporary restaurants, but the quality was just not there, and certainly did not justify the price. Instead, go to The Bank, Ivy, Coopers Hawk or Morgans.

I came here with my wife and a friend of ours to celebrate my wife's birthday, and had purchased a Groupon for this event. We were early for our reservation and had asked to be seated near the fireplace. We were told they would see what could be done. No biggie, we waited in the bar. The decor is very interesting; you can't quite pinpoint the theme of the restaurant. We were seated near the fireplace. We sat for approximately 20 minutes before we were even asked for our drink order. I'm not sure how long we waited for our drinks to arrive, but it was at least another 20 minutes. Once our drinks finally arrived, we were able to order our appetizers, it seemed to take quite a long time for the appetizers to come out. By the time our appetizers had arrived, we had been at the restaurant for over an hour. My wife and I were very irritated because of how long it was taking for the different components of our meal to arrive. We ordered our main entrees, which again took forever to arrive - over two hours of waiting since we arrived at this point. I had ordered the prime rib, which was over-salted. The manager said it has a salt crust but that is not listed in the menu. He took it away and trimmed it down when I brought it to his attention. My wife (extremely irritated at this point) had ordered the ribeye, which she had ordered medium rare, and it arrived well done. We brought this to the manager's attention, and he offered to replace it and said that it takes a while to cook which is why it took so long the first time. I'm sorry, but almost 4 hours for drinks, appetizer, salad, entree, and dessert???? I enjoyed my appetizer and prime rib but we won't be coming back. We also enjoyed our conversation with the manager, but the wait time was inexcusable for the evening over all. Our friend also wrote a review based on the same experience and the manager wrote a defensive reply. I'm sorry, but that just put the nail in the coffin.

I will agree with past assessment, the service isn't always great, but the food always has been! Steaks are fantastic, and the atmosphere and decor here is something I'd never expect from the curbside- very unique, and a cool place to bring guests! As someone who isn't a snooty local StC douchebag, but demands good food with character, I will be back!

I've been here twice since my initial visit. My husband wanted to come back for steak. We were asked if we wanted to sit by the fireplace or have a booth & we chose a booth. I still really like the ambiance here. The service was good both times. The Caesar Salad has improved since our initial visit. My husband did need to ask for more dressing since he couldn't taste it much. Bread rolls & butter is always a nice touch. We enjoyed Saganaki for an appetizer. Both visits I had a Cajun Chicken Alfredo. Although it has lacks any sort of spiciness, it is delicious. My husband really likes their bone in rib eye. . St Charles Place is on Groupon every once in a while for $25 for $50 which makes it a great deal for dining out.
(4)Mark K.
The food was bland and as I expected, the average age was in the upper registers. Perhaps that is no coincidence. So, if you're an older suburbanite who wants a large hunk of meat and a potato for supper, this is probably your place. I had a soft shell crab for an appetizer. It was alright. I had the chicken club as my dinner - I was expecting sliced chicken breast but it was the actual whole chicken breast. Very bland. I guess a chicken club is supposed to be bland? My wife had a special that was filet mignon with a cognac sauce tossed in rigatoni. I don't think she really knew what she was going to get. It was very rich and a waste of filet if you ask me. The filet was tender, but again - super bland.

I think 3 stars is extremely generous. For a drink, I like this place. It's dark, it's interestingly decorated, and the service is good. The food is mediocre, at best. We visited most recently with my boyfriend's parents. It was a Monday, and the marquee outside advertised "1/2 price burgers". My boyfriend got a burger, I think due to the fact that their steaks etc were expensive and his dad was taking us out. I opted for a pasta dish, since I don't eat meat and I didn't want to pick a pricey item either. Now, perhaps our choices weren't the best since they weren't expensive, but I see a flaw in that. Not to mention, I've never been overwhelmed by their food, any of it..so I don't think it's worth the risk to pay that much for an item at a so-so restaurant. The pasta that I got was angel hair provencale...I actually have made better at home. The portion was generous but the food was nothing special. I liked my Caesar salad, that was probably the highlight of my dining experience. Everyone else thought the food was decent but I have no desire to return for the food. When we were leaving, my boyfriend's father noticed the marquee and said that they had not taken 1/2 off the burger. I drive by this restaurant probably 10 times a week...the burgers have been 1/2 price for at least six months. The responsibility to adjust the bill should rely on the establishment, not on the customer. We didn't go back in for the price adjustment and will not return for dinner any time soon.

My parent's in-laws planned my rehearsal dinner at St. Charles Place. What a great choice! The food and service were absolutely wonderful. They gave us a nice space in back of the restaurant and did not really sit anyone around us which was nice of them to do. They thought of everything and from what I heard from my mother-in-law was that they were very helpful and easy to work with when planning. Highly recommend them for your event! Don't runaway from how it looks on the outside, the inside environment is amazing! They just need a facelift on the outside is all.

I love the Film Noir atmosphere of this restaurant. It is a great place to impress a date. I got the steak and stuffed shrimp special and it was delicious. The steak was cooked to perfection and the presentation was fantastic. The only aspect that was lacking for me was the service. If the waitress was friendlier, it would have made my overall experience much more enjoyable.

I went here last Saturday (10/22/2011) and this has been my fourth visit. It was really awesome. Our server was Nicole and she was on top of everything. I didn't know what to order and I was taking forever, she must have came and checked four times. The owner came over and explained the 32 oz steak deal for two. My boyfriend and I decided to get it and it was wonderful. Basically, they bring out this huge steak sliced but still attached to the bone with au jus and sautéed mushrooms. Then you and your date get to pick your own side and it comes with soup or salad. I think there is about 7 different sides to choose from ( baked potato, twice baked potato, mashed potato, roasted vegetables, sorry I can't remember the rest). The steak was very tender and everything else came out perfect. At the end of the meal my boyfriend wanted to make reservations for next time.

My wife and I stumbled on this with a groupon. I drive by the place everyday but have never been in. This has become out favorite steakhouse now for the last year. We try other groupon steak places and they all lead back to here. It's quite and romantic setting, the food is to die for & the service is outstanding. The owner seems always around and attentive and friendly.

I visited this place about 2 weeks ago to use my groupon. Decor / interior of the restaurant was quite nice (classic american steakhouse) and all but I wasn't happy with the service or the food. We got there around 5pm and there was only 6-7 customers.. The Host was no where to be found when my party arrived. Waited 5-6 minutes to be seated, which wasn't a big of deal. Food: St. Charles Signature Oysters Rockefeller was pretty good. I enjoyed it. However, it went downhill afterward. Salad was old and tasteless. It was not fresh at ALL. I had $50 ribeye. One of their signature dish. Although the meat was decent quality, they over cooked the hack out of it. The outside was BLACK and burnt. I felt robbed and dissapointed. If you cannot cook a thick cut of steak, do not offer it to people... Def not wroth $50 if the steak is ruined. Prime rib was pretty good though. Properly cooked Maybe I was unlucky on my first visit. What's more funny about the place is that they hiring "experienced chef" on their business billboard / sign.. Now I'm wondering if my steak was cooked by inexperienced chef or worker.... I see that they offer another groupon deal at the moment. I may give the place 2nd chance but overall, this place wasn't impressive and was a huge let down.
(2)Claire S.
No one picked up the phone, no one to seat us ( we had to find someone), service was very very slow ( entrees arrived after an hour of being there), not the friendliest of staff... Food is mediocre ( ordered baked clams, burger and the seafood special).
(2)Brian W.
Our first time here in a long time. The host was great, and stopped by a few times to check on us. The ambiance is very nice and we where promptly seated which is nice on a Friday night. We ordered soft-drinks and the Saganaki. The alcohol was actually too much and once put out it left a puddle on the serving dish that the cheese was sitting in. It left a very strong taste and my wife didn't like it at all (and we usually really enjoy Saganaki). I had the soup, clam chowder which was very good. My wife had the salad. For the main course we both ordered the London Broil (which was the special). It and its sides where very good. We where a bit surprised that there where not free refills on soft-drinks at a restaurant where the average price of a meal is $30+. As my wife put it penny wise/pound foolish.

We have been going here for our thanksgiving day meal for 12 years and this has been the first time that our meal was under par the turkey was very good as it has been in the past but when it came to the desert sorry to say the pie was still frozen!! as for the waitress she never asked how the meal was so a bite or two of the pie and that was enough for us.check please!!! can't really complain too much we both think that the food is very good but getting up there in price $80 for two turkey dinners.

Went here last night for Valentine's Day with my husband and some old and dear friends....my husband and I hadn't been here for quite some time - probably 10 + years and it will probably be much longer before we return....the service was TERRIBLE!! Waiting an hour and a half for dinner is unacceptable and as one diner commented in a previous review - our server disappear for several minutes at a time and was no where to be found....the food was OK, but definitely overpriced for the quality/quantity we received. Bummed that we didn't enjoy our experience - I was really looking forward to it.

When my wife and I take a trip to Saint Charles, this restaurant is one of our favorites. We were hesitant the first time we went, since we were not sure what to expect. We were pleasantly surprized. Asking for a recommendation Steak Su Poivre was mentioned. That recommendation was so good we have had it a number of times since then. Not only is the steak great, but so is the asparagus. I have had a special which many times appears in August. The atmosphere is very nice with an interesting interior, and we have always found the service to be superb. We are planning to go there very soon, and are looking forward to it.

Nice place, great food, friendly staff. Had the ribeye for 2 and was perfect. Comes with two salads and a side each. Good wine list also.

St. Charles Place is a timeless classic in St. Charles. I have been there several times for dinner, but would not consider myself to be a regular visitor. I keep forgetting how good this place is. On our most recent visit, the food was fantastic. I had a medium filet. It was cooked perfectly and had good flavor. Sides complemented the meal well. My wife tried to order a 12 oz. lobster tail, but they were out. The waiter gladly suggested 2-6 oz. tails as a substitute. She went with it and was thrilled with the quality of her meal. The ambiance of STP is great. It's got a rustic feel, but is still feels very rich and comfortable. I also like the fact that the owner is actively managing the place. You seem him walking through the restaurant, talking to customers, and explaining menu items. Hands on at its best. The only things that keep me from giving the place 5 stars are the prices -they're a little high - and the service can sometimes seem a bit inattentive. Still, I'd recommend the place for business dinners, special occassions, or just a great meal.

Over Rated! Overpriced and wine list is not all that great. The food is good but certanily not great and not worth the price of admission. The decor is nice and the place certainly has nice ambiance. The bar is nice and they have some nice jazz band that play there as well. Very good Martnis. I would say go there and expect good food, but not great. The owner is nice and accomadates the customers as best he can.

Not a great experience. First and last time dining at St. Charles Place. Restaurant was busy, which gave me hope, but then waiting forever for the waiter to even acknowledge us was the first turn-off. When he finally did, the attitude was palpable. No apology for the delay, but basically hurry up, give me your orders and don't ask me questions. Not that this was said, but he didn't have to, his actions, or lack thereof, were very telling. I must say that this was the worst waiter I have experienced in quite some time anywhere. I decided to get filet with scallops. The scallops were described as large, succulent and perfectly prepared. What they in fact appeared to be were about the size of a half dollar coin and were buried in sauce and bread crumbs. Nothing special at all. The steak was perhaps average. I expected more for the price and the combination of terrible service and average at best food puts this restaurant on the do not return/do not recommend list.

Our party ordered the steak au poivre, broiled tilapia, and the fancy salad. The salad was refreshing, the dressing was tangy and size was great. I felt it was worth more than the au povre in quantity heh. The chef made the steak just right and the sauce was really good. The tilapia was fresh and was cooked to perfection without that fishy smell when you try to broil at home. The service was quick and very attentive.

My hubby and I started going here because we bought groupons two years ago. The first couple of times we went there, the food was excellent, service was excellent and it made it to our list of favorite restaurants. The last two times we went here, the food wasn't nearly as good and we would have been mad had we paid full price. Atmosphere: Dark interior, reminiscent of an old supper club with 20's touches, light fixtures. A wall of old logs that gave it a warm, lodge feel. There is a full bar area which is nicely decorated with a tree growing out of the ground lit up with white lights. It is romantic, but you could also brings friends or do business here. Could bring kids, but we never have. Service: The service is always really good, we have had the same waiter several times. He is very efficient at bringing the dishes in a timely manner, refilling drinks and making sure we're taken care of. Food: The first couple of times we went there, we ordered steaks and they were always properly cooked, moist and flavorful. We typically get some type of steak topping, which had been plentiful. The last time we went there, I ordered the shrimp scampi and I decided after that I'd stick to steaks. This time, here is what we ordered and details on each dish: Bread - comes free with the meals, always warm and crunchy with soft butter Salad - salads come with each entree and while they were fresh, they were just swimming in dressing (for both my hubby and I). And I am the person who ALWAYS gets extra dressing because I like alot of dressing and even for me it was way too much dressing. The salads aren't very big, but big enough to get some greens to go with your meat. Steaks: The steaks were prepared well enough, but they weren't as tender as usual. They are normally very tender, moist and melt in your mouth. This time they weren't horrible, but they weren't that tender either. The amount of the extra topping on the steaks was meager for 3 bucks. Potatoes: We both ordered the twice baked potato and my hubby commented that his was overdone on the top. The inside wasn't dried out surprisingly, though. We passed on dessert. All in all, it was worth the price of the groupon, but not more. I won't write them off yet, but their quality of food seems to be declining. I really loved this place originally, so I'm sure we'll give them another try, eventually.

This is not at all your typical restaurant. St. Charles Place has an ambiance that is indescribable. The atmosphere is very warm and romantic almost of an alternate generation combining the most tasteful. The food is exquisite. Anyone with class and knowledge of good culinary arts would say so. I always order the special, mostly without even knowing what it is since I am completely confident that I will be fully satisfied. If I had to decide on my favorite dish it would be the London Broil. Do not hesitate the opportunity to visit this fine establishment. It will be worth your while.

Only stopped in for a drink but I will be back for dinner! Great Place!

Very good food, excellent service, and fantastic atmosphere. Their menu is ecletic enough to offer something for everyone and the wait staff is professional and attentive. Their kitchen rolls out consistently great food; I've never had a disappointing meal. Everything tastes fresh and it's always well prepared and presented.

We were traveling and looking for a nice place to have dinner for two. This looked like a good option as we drove down Main St so we decided to give it a try which was a great decision. We were greeted by owner Tom who was very welcoming and offered great menu recommendations. The ambience was amazing and just what we were looking for. I had the filet mignon with cognac sauce which was THE best I've ever had. The grilled veggies were cooked to absolute perfection. My fiancé had the chicken which was also wonderful. This is a great place if you are looking to enjoy your dining experience. Some other reviews are a bit negative in terms of service. The staff was very busy but very attentive and friendly. Will definitely be back and highly recommend to anyone that is looking for a fantastic meal. If we were local residents we would definitely be regular customers.

The food here was above average and the ambiance was good. However, the pricing was on the high end, and the service was acceptable. My wife's entre was outstanding, but she was really disappointed that a choice of vegetable described in the menu was not offered to her. Instead, she was given an overcooked baked potato. My entre, pan fried scallops, was good, although the double baked potato seemed to be old, and suffering from being kept warm too long. The menu was adequate, but lacking any imaginative dishes. The owner stopped by our table twice, which was a nice touch, but our server did not refill drinks at all. Overall, my expectations based on the previous reviews i had read were not met. This is an average restaurant for food, with rather high prices.

I had my weddin here. Good sea food and good for banquets.

I'm often asked by co-workers and business aquaintances to reccomend a resaurant in Saint Charles, as i've lived here most of my 60+ years. I might hesitate if there were diners in the group who are not BIG MEAT fans, but even then, there are alternatives. This is a family-run business that shows the pride a Greek-American family can bring to the dining experience. Two sons of the man who purchased this place, some time ago, I'm guessing 15 or 20 years, operate the place from day to day with the help of their wives and a loyal staff. There are busboys here who have been with them for 8, 10 years or more! Even if you only visit once or twice a year, you're recognized as an old customer, and treated with respect and welcome. And the food...you'll drive a long, long way to get a better steak and even then you might not find it. Nothing second rate here, nothing skimped. The prices are not cheap, but it is not cheap quality. Rare in steak houses today, the potato and salad are included in the dinner price, not seen as ala carte extras, so there is value here. The service is absolutely the best. Even when they are very busy, they are fully staffed, and attentive. I'm not all that demanding, but I might as well be, because the staff at St. Charles Place have always gone out of their way to make certain that everything was to my liking. And yes, I am one of those customers who has dinner here once or twice a year, I'm not getting treatment any different than every other customer in the place. Oh, and I can't finish without this. Out wandering for dinner one night, I noticed on their Marquee, "Worlds best burgers." Ok, so I gave it a shot. You know what? I haven't traveled the enitre world yet, but so far, the burgers here are the best I've ever had. But go on Monday night when they have been half-price lately.

Driven by this place for 8 years and finally stopped, by myself on a Tuesday night, and ate at the bar. I came not for seafood, ambience, or fawning service, but for one reason - to see if they cooked a good steak. The answer, sadly, is no. I ordered a $45 charred bone-in rib eye covered in mushrooms, spinach, and cesar salad. The steak was huge, and cooked perfectly to medium rare. It was also tough relative to what a rib-eye should be, lacked flavor and was clearly devoid of that rich, awesome taste and mouth-feel that should accompany such a fatty cut. The mushrooms were cold and clearly, by size and taste, came straight from the can. I order out or cook a steak a week, and I find it impossible to believe this was either prime or top-grade choice meat, as this place claims. Granted, a prime steak of this size at a Morton's or other top-end steakhouse would be $60 or more just for the steak. But for $45, you should get a great-tasting steak. And canned mushrooms? At this price? I would gladly have had a quality piece of meat, half that size, for the same price. As an aside, the sautéed spinach was good and salad OK. I will note that the bartender, who had two other customers, had to be reminded to bring the glass of wine I ordered. I really wanted to like this place, but can't recommend it for those seeking a really good steak. It has a great, supper-club feel, but the price point was far too high relative to the food quality. Outback serves a better steak.

After purchasing a Groupon my husband and I decided to drive from Chicago for a nice Saturday "date night" dinner. The atmosphere was nice, the chairs were comfy...the food was awful. Everything we ordered tasted like bad wedding food, which is ironic because they do host wedding banquets there. Our meal tasted like it was made from prepackaged ingredients and not made fresh. It was a sodium feast! We ordered their signature shrimp appetizer, which was 4 jumbo shrimp in a garlic sauce with breadcrumbs, way overpriced and just OK. I ordered their signature Filet dinner and my husband also ordered a Filet and shrimp special (which our server had no knowledge of). My steak was cooked well but the brandy sauce that my steak was drenched in tasted like a poor sodium rich beef broth base. The mashed potatoes were pasty and piped onto the plate. My husband didn't have any better luck with his Steak and shrimp special. When his plate arrived I thought that there was shrimp and a small portobello mushroom on it. His special filet was no more than 1.5 - 2oz. When the waitress asked if there was anything else she could get us I almost said "yea, the rest of my husbands steak!" Both of our dinners cost near $30 each. I expected the food to be on par with Wildfire or Ditkas because their prices were certainly the same as those steak houses but this place is not even in the same league. Our bill totaled $100 for an appetizer, 3 glasses of wine and 2 steak entrees. Thank god we had that $50 groupon and still felt it was a waste of money.

Steak and seafood restaurant. Had the prime rib and it was pretty good. What was really good was their double baked potato. A bake potato with the insides carved out, mashed and rebaked w/ all the goodies (green onions, chives, sour cream, cheese). Its f-ing delicious. So be sure to try the double baked potato there!

Absolutely beautiful inside...and yes, there is a big beautiful (real!)tree in the middle of the restaurant! I love the decor, ambiance, music (from the owner's ipod). The owner is always there, visiting tables, greeting guests..he's great. Service has always been terrific. The food is fantastic and I do not think it is at all overpriced for what you get. The lobster bisque is phenomenal, and the steaks are great. You will leave stuffed!
